Here in the USA we don’t get all the bikes that the Japanese manufacturers make. Sometimes that’s a real shame, in my humble opinion. But I understand the manufacturers have substantial costs involved in bringing in a new model and, despite what I think, they don’t believe it will be cost effective to sell a particular model on this side of the pond.

Sometimes they take a chance. A few years ago Yamaha announced they were bringing the FJR1300 to the states, after selling it in Europe for a while. Yamaha was smart, they asked customers to pre-order the bike, and they only brought in a limited number. The limited supply of bikes sold out quickly, and Yamaha didn’t have to worry about excess units gathering dust on showroom floors. From my armchair perspective, the FJR1300 was a gamble that worked.

For 2011 there are a few truly new bikes coming to America.

The Ducati Diavel is Ducati’s first stab at a cruiser in quite a while. Ducati’s previous effort at an American style cruiser was a styling disaster. The new Diavel, on the other hand, is quite a smart looking machine. It’s not your typical cruiser, more of a power cruiser I suppose. The look is chunky and mean, like a pit bull with wheels. No ape-hangers here, the bars pull back only a little, and the front end has rational geometry that looks cool and should also handle well too. The 300 mm wide rear tire might appear to cause difficulty going around corners, but I’ve got to believe that the bike will handle decently. Hey, it’s a Ducati, right?

I’ve seen online discussions about who the Diavel is supposed to be aimed at. Traditional Ducatisti looking for something different in their garage? Or is Ducati trying to expand their customer base to new customers? I suspect the latter. Time will tell if the Ducati Diavel is successful, but I’m optimistic. I think Ducati has carved out a new niche in motorcycling.

On a side note, the seat on the Diavel is awful. It’s practically a big “U” shape, effectively locking you into one position. Uncomfortable for my 6′1 body. The good news is that Ducati has created an opportunity for aftermarket companies to build seats for the Diavel.

The Honda CB1000R is a new naked bike from Big Red. I saw one of these at the Isle of Man a couple years ago, and really liked it. Over the years there have been many so-called naked sportbikes sold in Europe that have never made it to these shores. I’ve heard a lot of guys complain that, if only the OEMs would bring in such-and-such a bike, it would sell like hotcakes. But you have to remember bikes like the CB1000, Hawk NT650, W650, GB500 and B-King, which seemed like a good idea at the time, but sold in numbers too small to justify keeping them in the lineup for more than a year or two. Again, the jury is out on how well the CB1000R will sell. I’m not so optimistic about this one.

The Yamaha Super Tenere is also coming to America after years of availability on Europe. Europeans have a different attitude toward bikes, riding them to work much more often than we Yanks do, no matter what the weather. The big adventure bikes have been popular in Europe for years, and are starting to catch on in the USA. Yamaha is taking aim squarely at BMW’s R1250GS, with a more palatable price point. Will non-Beemerphiles line up at their Yamaha dealership for a Super Tenere? I’m not terribly optimistic about the Super Tenere either.

And then there’s the Honda CBR250R. It’s a very neat looking little sportster. Tiny compared to most other full-size motorcycles. It’s only competition is the Kawasaki Ninja 250R, which has been selling well in America since God was a small child. Many years ago Honda also sold the VTR250, which was quite a forgettable little bike that didn’t last long. My guess is that the time has come for a bike like the CBR250R. Have you seen gas prices lately? After one more spike in gas prices, I suspect Honda dealers will be scrambling to keep enough CBR250R’s in stock to meet customer demand. I think Honda has a winner here.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about electric motorcycles. The inaugural TTXGP was held at the Isle of Man in 2009, featuring electric road racing motorcycles. Electric motorcycles are quickly becoming more mainstream, with ever-lower prices and ever-increasing range.

The Cycle Guys (www.TheCycleGuys.com) worked with Hollywood Electrics (www.HollywoodElectrics.com) to fit the FastPack Universal to Electric Motorsports GPR-S and the Zero S electric motorcycles.

FastPack from The Cycle Guys is a retractable tail bag that attaches to your motorcycle’s passenger seat. When you don’t need it, zip it down and it functions and looks like a padded seat cover with a carbon-fiber look. When you need to carry stuff, just unzip the perimeter zipper and FastPack expands up to provide useful cargo capacity, similar to a small tank bag. With FastPack you can carry lunch, gym clothes, shoes, a six-pack, whatever! FastPack is available in 7 sizes to fit a variety of modern motorcycles, including the electric motorcycle noted here. For information contact The Cycle Guys at www.TheCycleGuys.com or 714-357-1102.

The guys from MotorcycleSmack.com went to the Long Beach Motorcycle Swap Meet on June 24th, at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach, Californinia.

This swap meet has been going on for many, many years. One vendor we talked to had been selling there for over 20 years. The visitors are mostly older, too, with many of them proudly displaying their allegiance to Harley Davidson on shirts, hats, and tattoos.

We guessed the event was around 50 percent Harley-oriented, 25 percent old Japanese and British iron, and 25 percent bicycle related. There’s a nice variety of parts and products for sale at this event- everything from handlebars for your hog to polish to hats to belts to luggage to 70’s Japanese cafe racers for sale.

Although mostly male and a little surly looking, the swappers are generally a pretty friendly bunch. You have to be quick to get the best deals. The meet opens at 7 am sharp, and bargain hunters quickly scoop up the finest treasures in new and used parts. One hesitant shopper checked out a piece of $10.00 luggage, put it down, and within one minute the item was scooped up by a quick thinking bargain hunter. Mr. Quick asked Mr Hesitant if he had wanted to buy the bag. When Mr. Hesitant replied "yes, I was thinking about it", Mr. Quick’s smiling reply was "well, too bad, you lose!"

In addition to parts and accessories, there’s always a number of interesting bikes for sale. As far as we were concerned, the star of this particular show was a beautifully done cafe racer based on an old Honda 750. The paint was very 70’s looking, but who knows when this thing was built. With tiny, narrow bars, a rigid rear suspension and practically no seat padding, this thing looked barely ridable. But it was sure gorgeous. Just the thing for the motorcycle collector who likes looking at his bikes just as much…or more…than riding them.

The So-Cal Cycle Swap Meet is put on by Topping Events, and they have motorcycle swap meets in Vallejo, California as well.

The next Cycle Swap Meet in Long Beach is July 22nd. For more information visit www.toppingevents.com

You probably won’t find much here for your new Yam-Ninja-GSXR-CBR, other than things like alarms, cleaners, clothing, tools, etc. But if your taste in motorcycles runs toward the eclectic, this is the place to be.

Cupertino, Ca (21 May 2008) – Ducati North America is honored to announce that it has won the prestigious Robb Report “Best of the Best- Sport Bike” award for the second year in a row.

The Robb Report “Best of the Best” awards are given to objects of desire on an annual basis; with the Sport Bike category highlighting the pinnacle of performance motorcycle technology. Ducati has been the proud recipient of this honor for two years running; with the award going to the ground breaking 1098 S Superbike in 2007, and now the Desmosedici RR- the world’s first Moto GP derived production bike.

Unveiled at the Italian Grand Prix in 2006; the Desmosedici RR can be considered the most exotic performance motorcycle on the planet. With 200 horsepower on tap and such precious materials as magnesium, titanium and stainless steel draped in carbon fiber bodywork; it represents the epitome of what a sport bike should be: fast, lightweight, and aerodynamic.

The June issue of Robb Report reports: “As a complete package of desirability, the Desmosedici RR is without peer.”
“The Desmosedici RR is that rare thing; an extraordinary fantasy made real.” Says Michael Lock, CEO of Ducati North America. “The Best of the Best is a fitting title for this Italian creation and we are proud to be able to bring it to life.”
Your intrepid MotorcycleSmack.com editors spotted this rare and oh-so-lovely Bimota SB8R at the Mid-Ohio AMA Superbike Races. Seeing this beautiful twin-cylinder machine brought back memories of Anthony Gobert’s campaign with Bimota back in 2000. Gobert gave Bimota its one and only World Superbike victory, in the rain at Philip Island. It was Gobert’s last real bit of glory, and his slide into racing oblivion had already begun.

Gobert was a phenomenally talented rider in the 90’s, but had difficulty playing by the rules of the roadracing world. For whatever reason he seemed to have trouble staying away from drugs and alcohol, failing several drug tests along the way and losing some very important rides, including a ride on a Suzuki 500 GP bike.

Your MotorcycleSmack.com editor had a few encounters with Gobert over the years. There was the practice day where Gobert came past your editor on the track at such a rapid rate of speed that time stood still for a moment. Another chance encounter found Gobert in a bar in Orange, California, chatting up the beautiful barmaid and later relieving himself against a car in the parking lot. Ah, those were the days!

Last we heard Anthony still racing, in the Australian Superbike Championship.

Valentino_Rossi_Fiat_Yamaha_MotoGP_0.jpgThe bosses of MotoGP are mulling over a spec-tire rule for 2008, forcing all riders to use one brand of tires. Just like World Superbike. All this after just one year of Bridgestone dominating the podium. Is this a good thing?

The bosses at Dorna, owners of the MotoGP race series, have proposed the introduction of a single tire rule for all MotoGP bikes in 2008. CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta said “We have made a proposal in the Grand Prix Commission meeting today to reach an agreement between all the different tire manufacturers for the use of tires in 2008, owing to the situation in which some factories believe that they can’t have tires which they think are competitive. We thought that the best possibility is to go to a one tire rule”.

This is likely in response to the new kid in tire-town, Bridgestone, and their incredible success in this year’s MotoGP World Championship. Long-dominant Michelin has had a bit of success this year, including taking the top three qualifying spots in this week’s MotoGP race at Motegi Japan. Nonetheless, Bridgestone has dominated the podiums this year, with Casey Stoner and his Bridgestone-shod Ducati winning eight races so far.

“This is only an initial proposal. If the situation is not resolved by Malaysia,” in four weeks time, “then all relevant parties-the FIM, IRTA, and the MSMA-will reflect on the situation and during the grand prix weekend make their final decision” continued Ezpeleta.

The issue of tires in MotoGP has been on everyone’s lips this season. HRC President Masumi Hamane said that Honda was hopeful of securing Bridgestone tires for 2008. There are rumors that both outgoing world champion Nicky Hayden and unlovable elf Dani Pedrosa
have requested to ride on Bridgestone next year.

Bridgestone have said they do not intend to supply Honda with tires next year. However now the possibility exists that Bridgestone will supply tires for every MotoGP team in 2008. Of course, every tire maker will be asked to submit a proposal.

Spec tires became the rule in World Superbike a few years ago. Despite initial fears of “dumbing down” the series, and one season of slower lap times, the spec Pirelli tires have become quite good in recent years, and WSB has had extremely close and exciting racing.

Formula 1 (cars, dontcha know) has also adopted a one-tire rule this year, with all teams running Bridgestones.

Your friends at MotorcycleSmack.com are not sure how we feel about having a one tire rule in MotoGP. We were very skeptical about spec tires in World Superbike, but that has proven to be a good thing for the racing. While we believe no harm would come to MotoGP racing if it adopted spec tires, we don’t believe the problem is serious enough to warrant such a move. After all, Michelin dominated the World Championship for many years, and Bridgestone has ruled the podiums for only 1 year. Michelin is a huge, powerful organization that shouldn’t be counted out quite so quickly. And while Dunlop hasn’t had significant success in MotoGP, who’s to say they won’t be competitive in a year or two.

It’s too early to say where the trend is going. We say let’s see what happens next year before declaring that everyone must run the same tire.
