Default Front-end Shimmy

I have an old Honda 550 that my cousin just gave me. When i get over about 45 mph my front end starts to shake. Tire pressure seems fine. Would new tires help? My cousin says a little shimmy is normal, but I don't like it.

thanks,

Absolutely new tires might help. Or it could simply be that your existing wheels/tires are out of balance and need to be rebalanced. Could be that one of your balancing weights fell off. Roadracers and track day riders often put a piece of duct tape over their wheel weights to help keep them on at high speeds.

Another possible source of your wobble is steering head bearings. This is definitely something to look at on an old, high mileage bike. Make sure the bearings are torqued correctly, and if they're still a little loose then replace them.

The stearing head bearings are not silky smooth, but they don't seem loose or wobbly.

There is no weight on the wheel, I guess I better take it in for balancing.

thanks
